About Deborah Balm

A little about ME

I’m a British audiobook narrator based in Cambridge in the UK, working from my professional home studio. Since becoming a full-time narrator in 2020, I’ve recorded nearly two hundred audiobooks across fiction and non-fiction for large publishers and Indie Authors.

My natural voice is warm, rich and assured, with a contemporary British sound and a flair for character. I’m particularly drawn to fantasy, especially stories steeped in folklore and myth. I love character-led storytelling, wit, emotional depth and a strong sense of place, whether that’s in epic fantasy, romantasy, cosy fantasy, historical romance, historical fiction, crime and thrillers, or narrative non-fiction.

Aaaand when I’m not in the booth… I’m an enthusiastic learner of crafts, anything involving fabric or yarn, I always have a few WIPs at any one time. I sew, knit, crochet and quilt, and you can usually find knitting in my handbag. I have also reached SABLE (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy) in both fabric and yarn, which is both an achievement and possibly a warning of the dangers of crafting in mid-life.

I’m also extremely fond of pugs.  Our dog is Evie and we usually have a foster guest staying with us from the pug charity we volunteer for.  They are quirky, opinionated, great communicators and very loving little beasties.  They make rather excellent familiars, but not booth buddies, on account of the snoring.

honing my craft

You might think that having narrated almost 200 books I would feel that I’ve got this covered, but I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning and continuing to build my craft. I’ve undertaken extensive audiobook-specific coaching and performance training, including all of Joel Froomkin’s current Acting for Audio classes and Sean Allen Pratt’s year-long non-fiction narration training programme.

I regularly invest in acting, character, accent and vocal performance work, most recently attending a class studying Meisner technique at RADA. I’ve also attended every Audiobooks at Sea cruise, three Narrator Educational Network Retreats (NENR) in Ashland, Massachusetts, and every Audiobook Narration UK conference since its inauguration, as well as attending APAC and the Audies whenever I can.

Many of these events and training opportunities take me to the US, so attending them from the UK represents a significant investment of both time and money. For me, that investment in the craft is simply part of being a professional narrator.

Community

The audiobook community is a hugely important part of my professional life. In 2026, I was extremely proud to be invited to serve as a judge for the PANA Narrators of Distinction Awards.

Closer to home, I love contributing to the UK narration community. I help organise the twice-yearly UK Narrators’ Lunch in London, I co-run the UK Narrators Facebook group, and am a co-admin of the British-based narrators’ WhatsApp community.

Behind The Voice

A lifelong reader and history enthusiast, I’m particularly fascinated by the classical world and medieval European history. I bring that curiosity, attention to detail and genuine love of storytelling to every book.

Beginnings

On a trip to Greece in the early 80's my father took a photo of Alexander the Great riding Bucephalus in Thessaloniki. I was there when he took it, and that image has stayed with me ever since.  As a horse rider and lover the story of how Alexander got to ride Bucephalus really spoke to me.

My fascination with the ancient world led me to study Classical Civilisation at A-level, and grew into a lasting love of history, mythology and folklore, particularly the classical and medieval periods.

a wider world

As a student, I spent a year living and working in Switzerland, an experience that opened the door to a much wider world.

I've travelled extensively throughout Europe, developing an enduring interest in its languages, cultures and history. I'm endlessly curious about the places people come from and the stories they tell.

An Unexpected Route

Before becoming a full-time audiobook narrator, I worked in software engineering and database administration.  I was also a seriously dedicated computer gamer.

It may seem an unlikely route into storytelling, but the research, problem-solving, hyper-focus and attention to detail have stayed with me. They're especially useful when a book takes me into unfamiliar technical or scientific territory.
